Moisturizing Body Lotions Stimulate Skin Cancer

November 20th, 2008 by admin, under Beauty, Sickness. No Comments

A recent research was carried out on lab rats and showed that moisturizing skin creams boost skin cancer and the quantity of tumors in mice, however the effects of the moisturizers on human skin is still to be studied.

The research was carried out at the Rutgers University and the results were published recently. According to the revealed information, widespread moisturizing lotions and creams spurred skin cancer and tumor growth in laboratory mice that underwent sun rays exposure.

Doctor Conzuela Hammock reports that these skin moisturizers have tumor-causing capability.

However, Dr. Hammock stresses the fact that the research was carried out on mice and the implications in humans are unknown, if any. Nevertheless, the results draw attention to the issue and suggest further investigation in humans. (more…)

Excessive Weight May Lead To Miscarriage

According to a recent study published in the Fertility magazine, excessive weight may considerably increase the risks of miscarriages in pregnant women.

Dr. Rachael Weiss of California Fertility Center describes the obesity as the pandemic of the twenty first century. While obesity spreads among women of reproductive age, so does the problem of miscarriages.

The researchers have carried out a thorough study of the medical publications in specialized reviews that were published during the recent twenty years to see if there were any other researches that connected excessive weight with miscarriages and compared the course of pregnancy in normal-weight women to the one in women with excessive weight. Most of the studies concluded the miscarriage was more frequent in obese women at the term less than 20 weeks.

The analysis comprised the detailed study of the eighteen researches conducted earlier. The results were sad - more than 67 percent of miscarriages happened to obese women. The miscarriage risk rises even more when a woman, not her husband, needs a fertility treatment before she succeeds to get pregnant. (more…)

Obese Teenagers And Young Children Are Prone To Having Headaches

November 19th, 2008 by admin, under Medicine, Sickness. No Comments

According to a new study of American Association of Pediatrics, children with excessive weight are more likely to suffer from different sorts of headaches and migraines than children without overweight problems, and these headaches tend to become chronic.

However, the study suggests that once the excessive weight problem is eliminated, the headaches may also go.

Almost a thousand children and teenagers with headache complaints participated in the research, which proved that the greater the child is overweight, the more frequent are his headaches. However, the connection between the headaches and excessive body weight is not studied enough yet.

Dr. A.D.Patterson of Memorial Hospital, Wasington D.C., led the study which involved young patients who addressed the national headache centers. The medics have chosen a thousand children and investigated the issue by examining the group for almost a year. (more…)

A New Way To Keep Fit Found In Olive Oil

November 18th, 2008 by admin, under Diet. No Comments

The laboratory rats may help humans find a new way to control weight problems!

One of the recent studies has found a way to ward off hunger. Olive oil contains a certain fatty acid and other monounsaturated fats that do no harm to a human’s heart. These substances can help you fight off hunger.

The researchers suggest these results may help develop new medicine to control and enhance appetite.

Doctor Caroline Pullhemus is a leading pharmacologist at the Californian University. Dr. Pullhemus used the lab rats to test the effect of the oleic acid on the rodents’ stomachs. Once the fat was introduced into the animals’ intestinal system, it was soon turned into a fat messenger oleoylethanolamide.

Once introduced into the digestive system, the oleoylethanolamide activates specific receptors that consequently tell the brain that the body is full and the person no longer feels hungry. As a result, the person starts feeling full a lot sooner and eats a lot less at a time.

Pullhemus introduced the fat into the animals’ intestines surgically, and observed that the rats ate significantly less afterwards.

In order to study the mechanism deeper, the fat was introduced in an altered state, so that the mice body wouldn’t produce oleoylethanolamide. This way the mice’ appetite was not decreased.

The study suggests the creation of a drug that would prolong the feeling of satisfaction and fullness. Or on the contrary, the certain level of oleoylethanolamide can help people with decreased appetite. (more…)

According to a new European study, the modern screening programs that help the breast cancer diagnosis have a great impact on reducing the number of deaths from the illness.

The doctor J.M.Johann claims that the mortality rates have declined during the last five years, after the introduction of the special breast cancer screening programs that are obligatory for certain age categories. However, the women must undergo the screening on a regular basis.

Dr.Johann is a leading cancer specialist at the European Oncology Research Center. He and his colleagues have studied the breast oncology trends during the gradual phase taking the period of 30 years, starting from 1975. The specific Dutch screening program was in the spotlight of the research. Ever since 1989, female patients of 50-69 age category were encouraged to undergo the screening procedure. In 1990 the target population was covered for only 11 percent, whereas in 1996 the coverage was 100 percent already. The upper age limit was raised to 75 years in 1997 and included all women in 2001.
